  • Biography/ Background

    My research projects have been in diverse areas of healthcare conducted from both scientific and clinical perspectives. I originally began my career as a PhD candidate in a basic science laboratory. During my candidature, I investigated the molecular basis of small vessel constriction in animal models, as well as in isolated human tissue taken from patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI). My research identified the underlying mechanism of exacerbated vasoconstriction in patients with CLI and suggested specific targets for vasodilation to improve limb perfusion in this patient population.

    I then completed a post-doctoral position at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where I conducted clinical research projects investigating the impact of interval training in patients with coronary slow flow syndrome as well as exercise-based predictors of post-operative outcomes for patients undergoing elective surgery.

    I have since qualified for my nursing registration and am now a practicing perioperative nurse. Consequently, my research interests now also include improving postoperative outcomes for patients undergoing re-vascularisation procedures and improving the communication between perioperative nurses; a specialised area of nursing practice where traditional clinical handover constructs cannot be readily applied.
