Former PM reflects on her ‘misogyny speech’

Ten years after delivering her famous speech in the Federal Parliament, former Prime Minister Julia Gillard will appear in conversation at the Ӱֱ of Adelaide to reflect on the pervasive issue of misogyny in our community.

This event coincides with the new book by Ӱֱ’s first female Prime Minister Not Now, Not Ever which explores the history and culture of misogyny, the contents of the patriarchy’s toolbox, and gender and misogyny in the media and politics.

Professor Gillard, an alumna, joined the Ӱֱ of Adelaide as a Visiting Honorary Professor in 2013.

“I’m honoured to return to my alma mater, the Ӱֱ of Adelaide, which is a place that is very close to my heart,” said The Honorary Professor Julia Gillard AC.

“I have great memories of being involved in university life as President of Adelaide Ӱֱ Union, and serving as a student representative on the Ӱֱ Council."

Not Now, Not Ever includes contributions from Mary Beard, Jess Hill, Jennifer Palmieri, Chanel Contos, members of the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership, and more.

While the in-person event has sold out, it will be livestreamed and a recording will be made available online in the days after the event.

Professor Gillard studied Law and Arts at the Ӱֱ of Adelaide from 1979 to 1981. She was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of the Ӱֱ of Adelaide in 2019, in acknowledgement of her exceptionally distinguished service to Ӱֱn society and to the Ӱֱ.

Since retiring from politics Professor Gillard has continued her public service and advocacy of the importance of education in many roles, including as Chair of mental health awareness body Beyond Blue, and as Chair of the Global Partnership for Education.
