Shy species detected through new DNA technique

The Blind Cave Eel is the largest of three cavefish species known from ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥, growing up to 40cm long.

New species-specific tests that can detect endangered and hard-to-find aquatic animals through the DNA they shed in the water has been created by researchers at the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide and Curtin ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥.

$1.9 million for traumatic brain injury research

It is now recognised that traumatic brain injury (TBI) leads to long-lasting disability in a subset of individuals, including persistent impairments in memory, decision making and motor function.

A ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide study that will investigate the prediction of risk of long-term impairment and neurodegenerative disease development following traumatic brain injury has been awarded $1,987,160 from the Federal Government’s Medical Research Future Fund’s (MRFF).

Negative impacts of cannabis use during pregnancy

The use of cannabis during pregnancy leads to poorer health outcomes for babies, according to research from the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide’s Robinson Research Institute. The study found that continued use of cannabis at 15 weeks of pregnancy was associated with significantly lower birthweight, head circumference, birth length, and gestational age at birth, as well as with more frequent severe neonatal morbidity or death.
