New leadership for Uni of Adelaide architecture school

An expert in urban planning and its economic impact has been appointed the new Head of the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide's .
Professor Alan Peters has more than 30 years' experience in the field of urban and rural planning.
He will join the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide in February 2018, having served as the Head of the School of Built Environment and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment at the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of New South Wales (UNSW) over the past seven years.
Born and initially educated in South Africa, Professor Peters holds a PhD from Rutgers ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ in the United States.
Before moving to ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥, he was Professor of Planning and Director of the Graduate School of Urban and Regional Planning at the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Iowa. He is a former Director of the Planning Research Centre and Associate Dean Research at the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Sydney’s Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning, and he holds the title of Honorary Professor with ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ College London.
"Professor Peters brings decades of experience in urban planning and international academic leadership to this role," says the Executive Dean of the Faculty of the Professions, Professor Christopher Findlay.
"His research has been supported at federal, state and local levels in the United States, Canada and ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥, including the US Federal Reserve, and his work has involved close links with both public and private institutions."
Professor Peters's current research is focused on the impact of planning and transportation on housing prices; the impact of taxes on state and local investment; and the history of early-English planning, including the advent of map-making technology.
He has expertise in geographical information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and 3D visualisation, and has studied the consequences of urban form, vegetation, and buildings on the environment.
Professor Peters is the author of four books and numerous papers, with another book on the way.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to join the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide's School of Architecture and Built Environment, which has a long history of teaching and learning in the fields of architectural and urban design, and landscape architecture," says Professor Peters.
"My focus will be to extend quality educational offerings to students of all levels – from aspiring professionals to those already working in industry – and to help strengthen the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s research and its relevance to our community," he says.
Professor Peters will succeed George Zillante, who is stepping down from his role as Head of School and will continue as a Professor in the School of Architecture and Built Environment.
