First vet graduates swear oath for animal care

South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s first 'home-grown' veterinarians will swear the veterinary version of the Hippocratic Oath as they mark the end of their degree with a formal Valedictory Celebration today.

The inaugural class of 35 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students have completed six years of study - a three-year undergraduate and three-year postgraduate veterinary sciences program - at the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide's Roseworthy Campus. They will graduate as fully qualified veterinarians.

"South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ has been wanting a Vet School for many years - and now we have accreditation it's great to see our first class of students complete their degrees and take the first step in their careers as veterinary professionals," says ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide .

"Both students and the staff of the can take pride in the significant achievement that has brought them to this day."

At the Valedictory Celebration the class will be led through the Veterinary Oath by Chief Veterinary Officer of South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ Dr Roger Paskin.

They will swear to practise veterinary science ethically and conscientiously, and to maintain professional standards and principles of community and professional responsibility throughout their professional life.

"This is a great day for the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences and for this group of dedicated young people," says , Head of the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences.

"As our first cohort of veterinary students they have, in many ways, been pioneers for South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥n veterinary science studies.

"The establishment of the Vet School has involved tremendous effort from the rigorous process of quality assurance undertaken through to the development of the state-of-the-art facilities we now have on this campus.

"I want to pay tribute to the students and staff for their hard work, commitment and contribution to this process."
