Ideas festival asks: what is to be done?

The ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide will be the hub for the , which takes place this month.

As well as providing the key venues, it will also be represented by past and present staff and students participating in the four days of globally and locally relevant discussions from Thursday, July 7 to Sunday, July 10.

The ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s magnificent Elder and Bonython Halls will be two of the main venues used for the festival, which this year has the theme: "What is to be done?"

The 2005 festival is dedicated to the Hon. Dr Basil Hetzel AC, a medical graduate from the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide in 1944. Dr Hetzel will also deliver the opening address at the Elder Hall on Thursday, July 7 at 8pm.

Dr Hetzel was recently added to ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s list of Living National Treasures. He is a renowned international expert on iodine deficiency, and has held several major appointments in the fields of medicine and public health, as well as serving as the Lieutenant-Governor of South ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ from 1992 to 2000.

ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide staff taking part in the festival include Professor Graeme Hugo and Professor Ngaire Naffine.

Professor Hugo is a Federation Fellow and Professor of Geography with the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥'s Discipline of , and is also Director of the .

Professor Naffine teaches criminal law and medical law and ethics at the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide's . She has published extensively in the areas of criminology, criminal law, feminist legal theory and medical law, and been a visiting scholar at prestigious institutions in Europe and the USA.

Former students of the ÐÓ°ÉÖ±²¥ of Adelaide who will be appearing at the festival include David Chalmers, Julian Disney and John Murray.

Radio Adelaide 101.5FM is broadcasting The Festival of Ideas On Air, directly after the Festival from July 11 to 22. The broadcast schedule is available at the .
